A spare, considered space for two on Bali's quieter coast

Bali Utara - Xendit sits at the southern edge of the island's northern highlands, where the land begins to flatten toward the Bali Sea and the air carries a different quality than it does in the south. The property is designed for two guests only — not as a limitation, but as a deliberate choice to keep the experience unhurried and genuinely private.

The architecture draws from the stripped-back vernacular of northern Balinese compounds: raw concrete walls, timber detailing, and open-sided spaces that allow constant airflow without relying solely on air conditioning. Natural light enters from multiple angles throughout the day, and the orientation of the main living area is oriented to capture the long shadows of late afternoon across the courtyard.

The surrounding neighbourhood is quiet by Bali standards. The GPS coordinates place the property close to the coastal lowlands north of Singaraja, a part of the island where scooters outnumber tourists and the pace of daily life remains genuinely local. Mornings here smell of incense from the family compound next door, and the sounds are mostly birdsong and wind through bamboo rather than traffic or music from distant beach clubs.

Practically speaking, the property is well connected to the main road that runs along Bali's north coast, making day trips to Lovina, Singaraja's Dutch-era streetscapes, the snorkelling reefs near Pemuteran, and the volcanic scenery of Bedugul all achievable without long drives. A scooter rental is available nearby and is the recommended way to move through the area at your own pace.

A compact layout designed without wasted room

Main Bedroom

Queen bed · natural ventilation · garden aspect

The primary sleeping space is oriented away from the road, with a queen-sized bed positioned to catch the morning light. Timber slats provide airflow and privacy simultaneously, keeping the room naturally cool through most of the day.

Open Living Area

Seating · dining · indoor-outdoor flow

A single connected living and dining space with low seating, a dining table for two, and a wall that opens fully onto the courtyard. The concrete floor stays cool and the ceiling height keeps the space from feeling confined.

Compact Kitchen

Gas hob · refrigerator · filtered water

A functional kitchen with a two-burner gas hob, full-size refrigerator, and a filtered water tap. Storage is sufficient for a week's stay, and the counter faces outward toward the garden rather than inward against a wall.

Private Courtyard

Outdoor seating · shade · stone paving

A walled courtyard with dark stone paving and a small shade structure provides an outdoor room between the interior spaces. It catches the afternoon breeze and is shielded from the street by a solid rendered wall.

Bathroom

Rain shower · open-air design · garden wall

The bathroom uses the same raw concrete palette as the rest of the property. A rain shower head, natural stone basin, and a partially open ceiling above the shower area bring the outside in without sacrificing privacy.

What a day at Bali Utara actually feels like

You arrive in the early afternoon, when the light above the northern coast is white and direct. The property reveals itself simply: a low gate, a path of dark stone, and then the main space opening ahead of you without ceremony. Check-in is handled directly by the host — no front desk, no laminated instructions taped to the wall.

Mornings are the best argument for staying longer. The air is cooler here than in the south, and the first hour after sunrise belongs entirely to you — coffee made in the kitchen, the sound of the neighbourhood waking up, light moving across the courtyard floor. There is no pressure to be anywhere.

By mid-morning, the landscape starts to invite movement. The north coast road is accessible within minutes, and from there you can reach the black-sand shore at Lovina in under half an hour, or turn inland toward the lake at Tamblingan if the mood calls for altitude and mist. The property is genuinely easy to leave and equally easy to return to.

Afternoons tend to slow down of their own accord. The courtyard offers shade and a change of atmosphere from the interior spaces. You might read, plan the next day loosely, or simply let the afternoon pass without an agenda. In the evening, the kitchen is equipped for those who prefer to cook in, and the town nearby offers local warungs where the food is honest and inexpensive. The night here is dark in a way that southern Bali rarely is — quiet, with actual stars.

Notes on the north of Bali

Why the North Coast Rewards Slow Travel

Southern Bali moves quickly and that is not always a bad thing. But the north coast operates on a different rhythm — fishing boats before dawn, markets that finish by 9 AM, and a sea that is calm enough for snorkelling all year.

Singaraja and the Memory of a Colonial Port

Before Denpasar, Singaraja was Bali's capital. The Dutch-era waterfront, the Chinese merchant shophouses, and the Gedong Kirtya manuscript library all point to a history that most visitors to the island never encounter.

A Morning at Tamblingan Before the Tourists Arrive

The road up to Tamblingan takes forty-five minutes from the coast and gains enough altitude to change the air entirely. Arrive before 7 AM and the lake is almost entirely yours — mist, ancient shrines, and the sound of water.
